Too much happened for me to give you a real idea of what it's been like to work so hard for the Obama campaign these past couple of months, and honestly, I worked with so many people who have been at this for FAR longer than I was, so really this victory is theirs, but I would like to try and tell you about last night... You should have seen my house- it was a staging location for the last five days, and I was the Location Director. Over that time period we had 50-60 people a DAY in and out volunteering to talk to people, hang door-hangers, knock on doors, drive people the polls, etc... At 6:45 we called all of our canvassers back and every time a group came through the door we had rounds of applause and cheers and hugs going around through the people crowding the family room, living room, and kitchen anxiously watching our tvs... No matter what happened we knew we had put up the best fight possible, we had all made sacrifices and given everything we could-everyone here was a hero. We were flipping between CNN, BBCA, Comedy Central, and MSNBC, practically DYING to hear some news on returns as the polls closed on the east coast and across the nation. There was definitely trepidation- we all watched nervously and reassured one another when McCain received the early lead (the only time that night it would turn out), but quickly we saw Obama pulling in state after state. We still weren't certain, we weren't even confident, we were buffered by caffeine, carbohydrates and hope. We would cheer after every additional electoral vote gained, but still returned to near-silent angst as we kept our eyes on the states we knew would make or break the election. Then Pennsylvania went blue. The cheers that erupted from the crowd were deafening, and as the stations increased Senator Obama's electoral count, we all saw very suddenly that the victory we'd been working so hard for was actually within reach. One after the other the states began reporting numbers, and the votes began piling up faster than anyone could have anticipated. Ohio went Blue, and it was all over. There was screaming and jumping, hugs and lifting of people off the ground. John McCain gave a gracious and elegant concession speech, reminding us of the proud, passionate American he is. We had done it. There was no way Obama would fail to achieve the magic 270. After the initial burst of excitement and flurry of phone calls and texts to loved-ones near and far, we settled again, anxious to hear just how many votes the new President-Elect would earn, waiting to see if what we had done here, the unprecedented effort we had put forth in Nevada, would amount to anything. He didn't need those five electoral votes, but we did. And we got them. Nevada went blue with an overwhelming margin causing yet another eruption of cheers and elation, possibly louder than all the others. The numbers kept climbing, states we never expected to win went to our candidate, and people cried, hugging each other tightly. The crowd at my house began dispersing for the victory party. As a few remaining volunteers who'd taken time off and driven here from San Francisco remained we toasted our friends, colleagues, and our new President with some homemade hard cider, and awaited his victory speech. The speech, as I'm sure everyone will know and remember, was moving, it brought tears to my eyes, and those of the men surrounding me. This great and proud Nation had chosen a new leader, and had not given to terror, fear, or prejudice. Afterwards, Russ and I attended the Victory Party at the Grand Sierra Resort, and I gave and received hugs from many people who I will likely never see again. For me there is a bittersweetness to this victory- I am losing all those great and passionate people with whom I have spent so much time with over the past months, but I woke up today with a great sense of pride, and still hope, that we can once again prove our potential to be the greatest Nation on Earth. Yes. We. Did. Mind-set: accomplished |

So, I'm a staffer/GOTV Organizer/Intern, WHATEVER for the Barack Obama campaign. That might explain why I've been off of the grid for WEEKS. Plus I'm going to the gym 5 days a week and suck, and still working at the gym on weekend nights. Right now I'm just fucking stoked to see my bestfriend Dwayne, who's been gone for months. He's coming home in some 40 days, and I think I might have a small heart attack before then. People have been asking me what we're doing for his coming home party, rather than ask him, which irked him a lot, because it's not like I'm his fucking filter, they're just as capable as I am of sending him an email... But of course none of them did- so I'm now planning a big party at a part or restaurant for friends, family, buddies, and co-workers for the weekend before Christmas of all times. LoL Oh well, it's nice to be so important and loved, so shouldn't complain. Um... got a new job which starts the day after the election, so I'm quitting the gym, and purchasing an actual membership, and should finally rejoin the ranks of the living and social! GO me! I'm so excited, and it is nearly the same pay as I was making before. Boreal is also opening soon, and I've been rehired, so I'm so stoked on that. I'll have a regular 8-5 job, my evenings back, and then weekends I'll be tearing up the slopes (in between picking up fat tourists!) I could not be more excited, considering the virtual raping I received by 2008 so far this year... I'm still a little gun-shy over it all. Russ is going out of town on Sunday-Friday, so I have to be home to do all the shit he's been taking care of during my time with the campaign- taking the dogs out, taking the trash out, cleaning the cat boxes, etc. Things I normally have no problem taking over, but with how everything is ramping up for the final week, it feels a little overwhelming. Plus, I'm going to have a staffer from Chicago living in my house the 31-5, PLUS my house/living room will be a staging area for the finals days of the campaign, so I have to clean house MAJORLY and get the room ready, etc. Oh yeah, I'm working at 4:30am on Monday at the gym to cover a shift too. I kick ass. Because I will get it all done. I always do. That's why people come to me, because I make shit happen. Yeah- probably not all and not adequate after MONTHS of not updating, but seriously, I can't even wrap my brains around the internet right now. Oh yeah... my article came out in the October issue of the Reno Passport www.renopassport.com, and I'll have another feature in the November issue. Consider myself PIMPED! Like everyone else, I've been 'pestered' about my choice in candidates for the upcoming Presidential election since probably... 6 weeks after the previous election. I had been not only tight-lipped, but down right refused to tell anyone my thoughts about them until I felt good and ready. Well I finally feel good and ready. So who is it? I was almost certain I would vote for Nader as recently as this morning, but I've been doing more reading and thinking about the matter. Which aspect of my political and social identity would be given more credence when choosing my casting my vote? Hillary because I'm a woman? Barack because of his youthful drive and fresh face? Nader because I want to show my Third Party support? I had thought I was a Hillary supporter. I remember the Clinton era well, despite my youth, and I still look back with great appreciation of the tasks accomplished in during those 8 years. Yes I remember Hillary as well- intimidating, driven, crafty, intelligent- all of the qualities we need in a leader. I admire her. People alternate between chastising her for being too soft and sticking by Bill despite his infidelity, and calling her a hard-core ball-buster who isn't feminine enough- the fact that it appears so generally accepted that she can only be one or the other, and thus a woman can only be one or the other grates on me like little else does in this race. Her negative qualities, are often those that are praised amongst men. Today we have racism masquerading as National Security, and sexism masquerading as political strategy. She is willful, and commanding, and I have no dout that she has the qualities to lead this Nation forward. But my vote, sorry Ralph and Hillary, is for Barack Obama. Is he young? Is he less-experienced? I've read his books and I've looked at his policy and voting history; he and Hillary both have a stance on policy I greatly appreciate. But Hillary is lacking the thing I feel we need most now as a country facing some of our darkest days- HOPE. Barack seems to have more hope than all the other candidates combined. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23330293 Even when the talk turns to issues of his safety. Will he make mistakes? Will he say/do things that I don't agree with? Of course. Nobody's perfect, and for that matter, nobody can even agree on what perfect is. All I know is that we could all use some hope, and we are definitely due for a change. Alright Mr. Obama, you've convinced me. Let's hope you can convince the rest of the Country; good luck and God Bless. We're going to need it. Mind-set: awake |

Doctor Garson Romalis. He's an abortion provider. He's also a caring and devoted medical practicioner. I believe in choice, I believe in personal freedoms, I believe in the dignity of every human, and their right to privacy and respect. Abortion isn't the only issue that directs my votes and choices, but Doctor Romalis does a very good job at underlining the reason why I will always vote pro-choice, and support politicians and groups who do the same. Why I am an abortion doctor- God Bless the Canadians. Today I post this to honor the women who've lost their lives to 'botched' abortions, the doctors, nurses and bystanders who've been killed or injured by medical terrorists, and even to the potential lives that have been lost through abortion. Happy (belated) Anniversary Roe v. Wade, and Happy Anniversary R. v. Morgentaler. I AM A FEMINIST. I AM PRO CHOICE. I VOTE.
Today is Super Tuesday- politics and voting are at the forefront of everyone's mind. Please remember, when you check that box, what do you stand for, what does your vote stand for?

We have reached that day folks- the day the <strike>music</strike> Bill of Rights died. Have you heard of the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act? Yes that's right, an act of Congress that criminalizes thought-
"Harman's bill would convene a 10-member national commission to study "violent radicalisation" (defined as "the process of adopting or promoting an extremist belief system for the purpose of facilitating ideologically-based violence to advance political, religious, or social change") and "homegrown terrorism" (defined as "the use, planned use, or threatened use, of force or violence by a group or individual born, raised, or based and operating primarily within the United States [...] to intimidate or coerce the United States government, the civilian population of the United States, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives"). "
1984 has come to call- McCarthyism was nothing compared to what's coming under this law. Vague definitions of quasi-crimes used to eliminate the rights of individuals, what hath God wrought? Why is nobody talking about this, why is there so little uproar? More importantly, why the hell are our representatives not calling 'bullshit' on this?!
And don't call for help from the Fire Department or an Ambulance if something bad happens, they've been deputized and given the power to have you arrested for what you think and read.
You want a 'threatened use, of force or violence"? I'm not going to let somebody take my rights and my country from me- I will readily sign up to join a militant resistence to this sort of thing- if we can't stop them with our voices, we must stop them with our bombs. FREEDOM FOREVER.

The White Ribbon Campaign is an organization from Canada leading a call for a change in men's attitudes surrounding Domestic Violence. Every man has a mother, a sister, an aunt, a daughter, or a wife whom they love and would see no harm come to them. But it's not enough to simply not abuse the women in your life; men need to take a stand everywhere and say that they will not tollerate men they know physically, emotionally, or sexual abusing women. People trivialize the domestic violence movement, classifying it as a "woman thing" or other such nonsense, but the people of the White Ribbon Campaign are looking to remind people that domestic violence is not a women's issue, it's a family issue, it's a people issue, it's a human rights issue, and everyone has a responsibility to help end it. Please take a page from the book of author and male activist Jackson Katz and take a stand against domestic violence and sexism among men. This week KRZQ, in conjunction with local bars and businesses, is sponsering White Ribbon Week in Northern Nevada. Local businesses are holding "white parties" where everyone wears white clothes, and offering discounts and perks to men who show their support in the fight to end domestic violence and violence against women by wearing white ribbons. The event runs through Saturday December 1st, and I'd really appreciate it if my male friends and family would remember the women in their lives and wear a white ribbon in our honor. Ladies out there can always do their part as well, purple ribbons are for domestic violence awareness, but you can wear a white one as well to show you support men who take a stand against violence, and encourage the men in your life to do the same. Tonight there is a Democratic Presidential Debate. For many people I'm sure the most important thing about that bit of information is knowing that they're favourite television shows will likely be interferred with, but for some of us this is very important news. The debate will be held at the Univsersity of Nevada, Las Vegas. Nevada has been a much overlooked state when it comes to politics, and it's not hard to see why, but over the past 5-10 years Nevada's political influence has risen dramatically. Not only are we an early primary state, but we house the Majority Leader, and have become a swing state in recent presidential races. Like Ohio, and New Hampshire, we've found ourselves on the candidates' radar. Nevada is a rapidly growing state with a very diverse population- we need to be as informed as possible regarding the candidates. Things like states' rights, healthcare, education, and resource management will have a great impact on our state in the future, and we need to be sure to hold our elected officials accountable for policies that address these issues responsibly. Turning Yucca Mountain into an unsafe, poorly regulated nuclear storage facility will only happen if we revert to a docile, ignorant populace. This isn't about red state/blue state- remember, be aware, and vote! Mind-set: determined |

I've been thinking about crochetting or quilting blankets for the homeless in the Reno/Sparks area or for a battered women's shelter this fall and winter and was realizing how ambitious of a project that would likely be with my schedule. Rather than scaling back my ambitions site-unseen I thought I'd check with my Flist to see if anyone else out there would be interested in joining with me to try and accomplish this. So what do you say- any closet knitters, crochetters, or quilters out there who'd be willing to give some of their time to helping keep people warm this winter? We could even try to get together and keep eachother company and watch movies or whatever whilst we work. Mind-set: curious Tunes: MCR-Hell |

So I'm watching The Simpsons and this commercial for Super Pawn comes on:
"Need to see a doctor, and don't want to wait till payday? Super Pawn can give you up to $1500 as a payday advance!"
WTF is wrong with the world where a advertising point is that you cannot afford to see a medical professional WITHOUT first going to a pawn shop and getting a personal loan at up to 24% interest. Why, WHY WHY should anyone, ANY human being have to wait till pay day to seek medical attention?! What sort of society do we live in? It's common decency.
Also- Newsweek rated each State on it's medical care based on factors such as access, coverage, equity, quality, etc... and Nevada ranked in the "worst" with a tie for 46th out of 50...

CBS News and the Early Show have put together a piece on some alarming statistics involving Domestic Violence in this country. After leaving a violent partner a victim is at greater risk than at any other time in the relationship. Stalking, threats, and actual violence are common thus many women seek orders of protection or 'restraining orders'. Unfortunately, a disgusting habit of ignoring violations of these court orders has emerged amongst many of the law enforcement agencies across the Nation. Nevada is no exception- shame on these people for marginalizing and discounting the lives of victims and their families. Failure to act is failure to protect- complacency costs lives. The only reasonable solution is to enforce these orders, every time, and to enact tougher penalties against perpetrators of domestic violence and stalking. THERE IS NO EXCUSE. Battered Women's Justice Project is a wonderful organisation, and I recommend everyone who has ever known a victim of Domestic Violence check it out. They have a great post on the subject of Parental Alienation which I wrote about last week.
A sample of the common sense: Blaming “parental alienation” shifts the focus away from Baldwin’s choice – a hurtful tirade – and onto the imagined behavior of his child’s mother, suggesting she caused the child to reject him. This focus is indeed widespread and unfortunate. Rosenblum failed to mention that Richard Gardner, the originator of these buzz words, self-published his work, and the American Psychological Association has found it lacking in scientific evidence. In addition, even Gardner himself said “parental alienation” was not at issue when actual abuse was present. Just maybe an eleven year old child has her own reasons to reject her father. Thoughtful and well stated opinion article on Parental Alienation as a legal defense in custody cases, particularly those involving domestic and sexual abuse. Let me state officially, that nobody from the National Council has ever stated officially that we consider PAS 'junk science' and that this may have possibly come from somebody's personal beliefs. The Family Violence Department of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges rejects the use of Parental Alienation in custody cases involving allegations of Domestic Violence based on it's inability to stand up to legal challenge and evidentiary standards.
Yes- I am personally biased against PAS as a legitimate evidentiary syndrome, particularly because it has been rejected by many, many psychiatrists and doctors. Also because of it's prominent use in cases where there is a clear agressor, and based on studies, which are constantly being revalidated, that show that children lie about abuse and sexual abuse in less than 1% of cases. Doctor Gardner's published works were run through his vanity press and were not validated by peer review in any medical or psychiatric journals. He also wrote in support of pedophilia as a natural extension of human sexuality.

A lot of the incidents Mr. Ridgeway lists in his article have already been posted to my journal in pasts posts regarding DV. Info about these horific events can also be found at google news. Violence against women is happening, every day, all over the world, and here in America, we have become quite skilled at excusing the violence or blaming the victim for bringing it upon herself- NO MORE. I am a person: every mother, daughter, aunt, sister, and friend is a person. We are free and deserve a safe, happy home. We have the right to say NO, the right to dress and think as we please. We are not responsible for the actions and violence perpetrated against us- not now, not ever! NO EXCUSES!!!!

Heh, we may have Nazi for the Pope, but apparently we don't have to worry about the devil running for president.Although, it appears that the Dems are fracturing ALREADY- as 25,000 people who've no business running are "exploring" their chances. Hell, these chumps are paying consultants big $ to tell them lies, half-truths, and soften the news when they could just call me on the phone and I'd tell it to them straight for free. What's his face from Delaware?Senator Biden, I'm sorry but the way to win a presidential post is to start by making your name well recognized, and then after a couple of years of that, RUN FOR PRESIDENT. Don't use a presidential campaign as the sole name introduction- we saw how well that worked for Senator Kerry. Same goes for you Who's its from IndianaSenator Bayh, there's a NEW Mexico?Governor Richardson, and Insert "sack" jokes hereGovernor Vilsack. Dean, Gore, Obama, Rodham-Clinton, Kerry, and Edwards are the other SIX people who's names are buzzing around two years in advance. There could be 10 others before the primaries even begin! Dios, idiotas! If this keeps up, we're going to end up just as screwed as we were two years ago, when we had a realistic chance. Too many cooks, you know. Just as I was beginning to feel happy and relaxed to not think about politics for a while, I'm realizing I'm going to have to pay more attention than ever.
